Celebrating 250 & 25
Beginning Constitution Day, September
17th, 2000 the James Madison Museum will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the
birth of James Madison, and the 25th Anniversary of the founding of the Museum.
Now on Display: The last known
life-portrait of James Madison. This portrait by J. B. Longacre, was done in
July, 1833 less than 3 years before Madison's death. The portrait is on loan
from Dr. and Mrs. George G. Shackelford.
Plans call for a special exhibit on
the history of the Madison family in Virginia prior to the birth of President
Madison on March 16, 1751.
A traveling exhibit done in
cooperation with Montpelier and James Madison University is also being planned.
This exhibit will look at the many commemorative items that have been produced
over the years relating to James Madison. Items will range from a t-shirt that
has images of all of the Virginia Presidents, however James Madison's and James
Monroe's images have been reversed; to reproductions of Madison China and Indian
Peace Medals; to an early 20th Century silk given with the purchase of tobacco
products.
